\n The purpose of this workshop is to bring toge ther\n philosophers, mathematicians, and ma thematics educators to\n study a question w hich is both relevant and timely for all\n three groups, namely whether mathematical beauty a nd\n mathematical explanation are related.< /p>\n
\n Our approach is largely em pirical- we will develop a set of\n example s that will help us make necessary distinctions an d\n connections. The central questions of t he workshop fall into\n three classes. One class concerns relations between beauty and\n visualization in mathematics; the other class c oncerns\n relations between explanation and visualization in\n mathematics. The third, perhaps most intriguing, class deals\n wit h the question whether visualization is an essenti al link\n between explanation and beauty an d mathematics, that is: When\n some mathema tics is both beautiful and explanatory, does the\n conjunction depend on the presence of a vi sual element?
\n\n In addition to the scientific aims of the workshop, an\n important goal is to reach across normally rigid disciplinary\n domains to work on an area of common interest. We have\n invited top people from respective fields, some of whom know\n each other, but others (even within the sa me field) have never\n read each other s wo rk.\n
