DTSTAMP:20131017T000000
SUMMARY:Workshop on Beauty and Explanation in Math
 ematics (WBEM), Umea, Sweden
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20140310
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20140312
LOCATION:Umea, Sweden
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this workshop is to bri
ng together philosophers, mathematicians, and math
ematics educators to study a question which is bot
h relevant and timely for all three groups, namely
whether mathematical beauty and mathematical expl
anation are related. Our approach is largely emp
irical- we will develop a set of examples that wil
l help us make necessary distinctions and connecti
ons. The central questions of the workshop fall in
to three classes. One class concerns relations bet
ween beauty and visualization in mathematics; the
other class concerns relations between explanation
and visualization in mathematics. The third, perh
aps most intriguing, class deals with the question
whether visualization is an essential link betwee
n explanation and beauty and mathematics, that is:
When some mathematics is both beautiful and expla
natory, does the conjunction depend on the presenc
e of a visual element? In addition to the scient
ific aims of the workshop, an important goal is to
reach across normally rigid disciplinary domains
to work on an area of common interest. We have inv
ited top people from respective fields, some of wh
om know each other, but others (even within the sa
me field) have never read each other s work. For
more information, see the workshop website at htt
 p://mathbeauty.wordpress.com/wbem/ If you are int
erested to contribute a paper to the workshop plea
se submit an abstract, no more than 2 pages, descr
ibing with some detail what you would like to pres
ent, and whether you would like to present a short
(20 minute) or long (40 minute) presentation. Dea
 dline: December 1, 2013.
