The g oal of this Academy Colloquium is to establish a b asic\n theory of dependence and independence underlying seemingly\n unrelated subjects suc h as bound variables in logic, database\n the ory, the theory of social choice, random variables , Mendelian\n genetics, causality, and even p arts of quantum physics. There\n is an abund ance of new results in this field demonstrating\n remarkable convergence. The concepts of (in)d ependence in the\n different fields of humani ties and sciences have surprisingly\n much in common and a common logic is starting to emerge.< /p>\n \n \n
