SUMMARY:Workshop on Models in Formal Semantics and
  Pragmatics, Tübingen, Germany
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20140818
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20140822
LOCATION:Tübingen, Germany
DESCRIPTION:The field of natural-language semantic
s and pragmatics has undergone a shift away from d
efining or even mentioning models. Indeed, some sc
holars find their use redundant at best, harmful a
t worst. A generation of young semanticists got th
eir first encounters with the formal theory throug
h Heim and Kratzer's textbook, which does not ment
ion models at all. There is little open discussion
on these developments, but much anecdotal evidenc
e that people have strong opinions about them. Thi
s ESSLII-2014 workshop will give the debate a publ
ic forum. For more information, see http://homep
 ages.uconn.edu/~stk12004/Models_ESSLLI2014/. Th
e workshop has room for eight submitted papers of
30 minutes each, including discussion. Abstracts m
ust be submitted by February 15, 2014.
