SUMMARY:Workshop on Modal Syllogistics, Lisbon, Po
 rtugal
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20140911
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20140913
LOCATION:Lisbon, Portugal
DESCRIPTION:Aristotle is the founder of modal logi
 c. His system of modal syllogisms has been studied
for many centuries, with less than successful res
ults. In 1955, Jan Lukasiewicz declared that "in c
ontrast to the assertoric syllogistic which is per
fectly clear and nearly free of errors, Aristotle'
s modal syllogistic is almost incomprehensible bec
ause of its many faults and inconsistencies". Some
scholars have been trying to resist this pessimis
tic judgement and to articulate interpretations of
the modal syllogistic that are, at the same time,
logically consistent and plausible on exegetical
grounds. This workshop wants to provide a forum fo
r discussion and to reflect, via the contributed t
alks and informal discussions, the state of art of
the subject. For more information, see http://w
 ww.lancog.com/modalsyllogistics.html We invite su
bmissions of long abstracts or short papers on any
aspect of the modal syllogistic. The time slot is
80 minutes (50' talk + 30' discussion). We aim at
accepting five contributed papers. Submission dea
 dline: May 31, 2014.
