SUMMARY:1st European Conference on Argumentation (
 ECA 2015), Lisbon, Portugal
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20150609
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20150612
LOCATION:Lisbon, Portugal
DESCRIPTION:The European Conference on Argumentati
on (ECA) is a new pan-European initiative aiming t
o consolidate and advance various streaks of resea
rch into argumentation and reasoning: from philoso
 phical, linguistic, discourse analytic, cognitive,
to computational approaches. The chief goal of th
e initiative is to organize on a regular basis a m
ajor conference on argumentation. The first of the
se conferences will be hosted in Lisbon by the Arg
Lab, Institute of Philosophy (IFILNOVA), Universid
ade Nova de Lisboa. The primary idea behind thi
s first edition of the conference is that argument
ation and reasoning are the main vehicles for our
decisions and actions. They accompany, indeed cons
titute, a variety of significant social practices:
from individual practical reasoning, small group
decisions, deliberations of official bodies in var
ious institutional contexts, to large-scale politi
cal and social deliberations. Argumentation is und
erstood here as a mode of action - and not just an
y action, but a reasoned action, comprised of cons
ideration of reasons (whether they are good or bad
). Traditionally, argumentation has been assigned
many distinct functions: epistemic, moral, convers
ational, etc. The aim of the conference is to expl
ore how these functions are interrelated with the
practical need for deciding on a course of action.
Simply put, our chief concern is with the role ar
gumentation and reasoning play when the question o
f 'what to do?' is addressed. For more informati
 on, see http://www.ecargument.org/ The Programme
Committee and Organising Committee invite the fol
lowing types of original submissions: individual l
ong papers, individual regular papers, and themati
c panels/symposia. All kinds of approaches to argu
mentation and reasoning are welcome. The deadline
for all submissions is 1 October 2014.
