DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20150319 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20150321 LOCATION:Columbia SC, U.S.A. DESCRIPTION:- What are the roles of pictures and d iagrams in mathematical proofs, in formal reasonin g, and in epistemic justification more broadly? - Can pictures by themselves serve as arguments ins ofar as they can be persuasive and even convey a s ense of demonstrative certainty? For the most par t, these two questions have been discussed separat ely. We seek to bring them together and thereby ta ke them in new directions. These are philosophical questions that are addressed by many different di sciplines: STS, history of science, mathematics, e ngineering, media studies, and the visual arts. Th ey draw attention to technologies of picturing, th e contexts of practice in which proofs and procedu res of formal reasoning are employed, and problems and methods of teaching and communication. Fur ther information will be posted at the conference website http://artsandsciences.sc.edu/phil/content /trip2015 We invite submissions on any aspect of the relation between pictures and proofs. Please s ubmit by (extended deadline) November 30, 2014, a 400 to 600 word abstract (no manuscript required). X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:
