SUMMARY:Logic and Inference, London, U.K.
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20150319
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20150320
LOCATION:London, U.K.
DESCRIPTION:The role of logic can hardly be undere
stimated. On one hand, logical rules determine the
basic canons of correct thinking. On the other, i
t is well known that very large portions of mathem
atics can be reconstructed only using logic and de
finitions. But what is logic? And how, if at all,
can we know facts about logical validity? One prom
ising starting point for answering these questions
is the thought that logic, and our knowledge of i
t, are to be understood with reference to our *inf
 erential practice*. Accordingly, the conference
focuses on the twofold inferentialist idea that t
he meaning of a logical expression is determined b
y the rules for its correct deductive use, and tha
t to know the meaning of a logical expression is t
o know how to use it correctly. This very popular
idea among philosophers has never been systematica
lly explored. The main aim of the conference is to
clarify the position, and to explore its attracti
 ve, if controversial, epistemological ramification
 s. Website: http://inferenceandlogic.wordpress.c
