SUMMARY:Workshop "Testing Philosophical Theories A
gainst the History of Science", Oulu, Finland
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20150921
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20150921
LOCATION:Oulu, Finland
DESCRIPTION:Ever since philosophers first started
formulating theories of science those theories hav
e been compared with (reconstructions of) episodes
in the history of science. On this issue one find
s heated discussion in the 1960s and 70s, when som
e sought to turn philosophy into a testable enterp
rise, with history taking the place of scientific
experiment. The purpose of this workshop is to bri
ng this debate back to the table, assessing it in
light of the fact that so many contemporary debate
s in the philosophy of science make implicit assum
ptions about how history of science can bear on ph
ilosophy of science. This is a one-day workshop,
21st September 2015, organised by The Oulu Centre
for Theoretical and Philosophical Studies of Histo
ry and the AHRC project 'Contemporary Scientific R
ealism and the Challenge from the History of Scien
ce. The event is designed to bring together histor
ians and philosophers of science. Keynote Speakers
: James McAllister (Leiden), Helge Kragh (Aarhus),
Katherina Kinzel (Vienna) and Bart Karstens (Amst
erdam). Please find more information on this wor
 kshop at http://community.dur.ac.uk/evaluating.rea
lism/events03.html. Abstracts are most welcome fr
om both historians and philosophers of science. Ab
stracts of no more than 500 words should be emaile
d by 1st May 2015 at the latest.
