SUMMARY:NASSLLI workshop on Statistical and Logica
l Models of Meaning (SaLMoM), Rutgers University,
 New Jersey, USA
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20160711

LOCATION:Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA
DESCRIPTION:Mathematical models of natural languag
e semantics oscillate between the two opposing app
roaches of word-based statistical and sentence-bas
ed compositional. Word-based models rely on the id
eas of Harris and Firth that words occurring in si
milar contexts have similar meanings. Compositiona
l models, in the sense of Montague 1970, systemati
cally associate the steps of a syntactic derivatio
n with semantic operations acting on the interpret
ations of the constituents. This workshop is an at
tempt to bring together active researchers of thes
e seemingly separate approaches to address problem
s of both theoretical and practical nature. One m
ajor goal is to introduce the statistical research
ers to the advanced type-logical techniques that h
ave been developed to handle challenging grammatic
al phenomena; the second one is to help the resear
chers of the logical field to enhance their system
s with vector representations. The overall goal is
to help both groups collaborate to develop system
s where both word vectors and complex grammatical
structures can be reasoned about in a compositiona
l and computationally tractable way. For more inf
 ormation, see https://sites.google.com/site/statlo
gmeaning/. We invite submissions in the form of 2
-page abstracts on topics relating statistical and
logical models of natural language. This can be a
summary of an already published paper or a new co
ntribution. Submissions will be evaluated as to th
eir potential for establishing meaningful links be
tween the logical and statistical approaches. Dead
 line: April 1st 2016. Submission webpage: https://
