SUMMARY:Third Symposium for the History and Philos
ophy of Programming (HaPoP 2016), Paris, France
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20160625
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20160625
LOCATION:Paris, France
DESCRIPTION:One major challenge throughout the his
tory of programming is the development of an inter
face between humans, software and hardware. It has
been the task of the so-called operating system t
o: maintain a file system; regulate access to reso
urces; synchronize operations; etc. Today, Operati
ng Systems are usually equipped with Graphical Use
r interfaces (GUI) designed to give the 'user' a '
friendly' experience thus hiding – and sometimes
even rendering inaccessible – much of the under
lying structure and features of the computing mach
inery. The aim of the current symposium is to offe
r an opportunity for historical and philosophical
reflection on operating systems and the programs t
hey coordinate. Our approach is interdisciplina
rity and openness towards different fields relevan
t to HaPoC. We were and are strongly convinced tha
t such trans- and interdisciplinarity is necessary
if one wants to reflect on a discipline such as c
omputer science with its multidimensional nature.
The current symposium will be organized in a simil
ar manner and invites researchers coming from a di
versity of backgrounds, including historians, phil
osophers, logicians and computer scientists who wa
nt to engage with topics relevant to the history a
nd philosophy of programming and more specifically
that of operating systems. For more information
, see http://hapoc.org/hapop3 The Programme Comm
ittee cordially invites researchers working in a f
ield relevant to the main topics of the symposium
to submit an abstract. Abstract should be submitte
d at the latest by (extended deadline) April 14, 2
 016.
