SUMMARY:The Art of Voice Synthesis
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20160511
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20160513
LOCATION:University of Amsterdam, Orgelpark and ST
 EIM, Amsterdam
DESCRIPTION:Synthetic speech is part of modern eve
ryday life. Artificial voices do not only occur in
multifaceted technological uses, but they also fe
ed back into researching the natural human voice.
Moreover, artists, musicians and composers find a
source of inspiration in the artificial sound of s
uch voices. Our conference inquires both the richn
ess of the human voice and the limits and surplus
of its theoretical modelling and mechanical and di
gital imitation. We are specifically interested in
modelling and synthesizing so-called "extended vo
cal techniques" - all sounds the human voice can p
roduce, exceeding conventional singing and speakin
 g. The conference will cover the history of the ar
tificial voice, extended vocal techniques, aspects
of theoretical modelling and technical realizatio
n, and the role of the artificial voice in contemp
orary music. Academics, scientists and artists wil
l come together to exchange ideas and insights in
three days of presentations, meetings, workshops a
nd a concert. With a group of international expert
s we will place the artificial voice in a broad pe
 rspective of historical, technical, socio-cultural
, artistic and musical investigation. For more in
 formation, see http://www.artificialvoice.nl/
