SUMMARY:29 or 30 August 2016, The Third Internatio
nal Workshop on Defeasible and Ampliative Reasonin
g (DARe at ECAI 2016), The Hague, Netherlands
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20160829
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20160830
LOCATION:The Hague, Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:Classical reasoning is not flexible en
ough when directly applied to the formalization of
certain nuances of human quotidian decision makin
 g. These involve different types of inference to r
eason with uncertainty, exceptions, similarity, va
gueness, incomplete or contradictory information a
nd many others. It turns out that everyday reas
oning usually shows two salient intertwined aspect
s, the ampliative aspect (augmenting reasoning by
allowing more conclusions) and the defeasible aspe
ct (curtailing reasoning by disregarding or disall
owing some conclusions). Several efforts have been
put into the study and definition of formalisms w
ithin which these aspects could adequately be capt
ured at different levels, but despite the progress
that has been achieved, a large avenue remains op
en for exploration. DARe aims at bringing toget
her researchers and practitioners from core areas
of artificial intelligence, cognitive sciences, ph
ilosophy and related disciplines to discuss these
kinds of problems and relevant results in a multi-
disciplinary forum. The goal of the workshop is to
present latest research developments, to discuss
current directions in the field, and to collect fi
rst-hand feedback from the community. For more i
 nformation, see http://dare2016.yolasite.com or se
nd enquiries to dare.to.contact.us at gmail.com.
DARe welcomes contributions on all aspects of de
feasible and ampliative reasoning. We invite submi
ssions of papers presenting original research resu
lts or position statements. The selection of accep
ted contributions will be based on relevance, sign
ificance and the work's potential to foster discus
 sions and cross-pollination. Therefore submissions
of ongoing work are also strongly encouraged. Sub
 mission deadline: 12 June 2016.
