SUMMARY:Workshop 'Informal Aspects of Uncertainty
 Evaluation', Cambridge, England
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20160520
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20160520
LOCATION:Cambridge, England
DESCRIPTION:Philosophers of science have studied s
cientific uncertainty from the viewpoint of formal
probabilistic frameworks, such as classical proba
bility theory and Bayesianism. It is not always cl
ear how to apply such formal tools to cases of unc
ertainty evaluation encountered in scientific prac
tice. This one-day workshop will be dedicated to a
critical examination of informal practices of unc
ertainty evaluation in metrology, climate science,
particle physics and computer science, with the a
im of clarifying whether and why certain kinds of
uncertainty resist formalization. This workshop wi
ll also serve as the concluding event of the Econo
mies of Uncertainty project, funded by a Marie Cur
ie Intra-European Fellowship within the 7th Europe
an Community Framework Programme. Speakers will
be: Fabien Grégis (Paris 7), Phil Maguire (NUI Ma
ynooth), Luca Mari (LIUC Italy), Wendy Parker (Dur
ham), Lenny Smith (LSE and Oxford), Kent Staley (S
aint Louis) and Eran Tal (Cambridge). For additi
onal details on this event, please visit the works
 hop website: http://people.ds.cam.ac.uk/et382/even
ts.html. Attendance is free to all members of the
academic community and no registration is required
. However, if you plan to attend please email the
organizer, Dr. Eran Tal (et382 at cam.ac.uk) by Fr
iday, May 13th 2016 so as to allow for a sufficien
