With the development of cognitive science as an encompassing framework within which both psycholo gical and social aspects of human behaviour can be accounted for, we believe that the time is ripe t o ground a discussion in the community of argument ation studies around the notion of inference, alon g its formal, social and cognitive dimensions. The overarching questions the conference theme will b e concerned with are therefore the following: How does the study of argumentation connect with the n otion of inference and how, as a discipline, does it connect with the disciplines involved in the st udy of the cognitive features of inference? To fo ster this discussion, the conference accordingly s eeks to attract scholars in argumentation coming f rom a range of different traditions, including (bu t not limited to) philosophy, psychology, linguist ics, informal logic, speech communication, pragma- dialectics, epistemic approaches, rhetoric, dialec tics, logic, and computational approaches. In add ition to welcoming submissions linked to argumenta tion studies in general, each ECA edition has a sp ecial theme. While the 1st edition of ECA was devo ted to exploring the relationship between argument ation and the decisions that follow from it, the 2 017 Fribourg edition will focus on the cognitive p rocesses involved in argumentation, with a clear f ocus on what happens ‘upstream’ in the argumentati ve chain, both in production and reception. The 2n d edition of ECA will thus focus on inference as o ne of the key features of the argumentative proces s. The abstract submission deadline is 1st of Octo ber 2016. X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:
The field of argumentation has been expanding over the last decade with a clear opening towards cognitive psychology (and cognitiv e science more generally) and the processes it acc ounts for. With the development of cognitive scien ce as an encompassing framework within which both psychological and social aspects of human behaviou r can be accounted for, we believe that the time i s ripe to ground a discussion in the community of argumentation studies around the notion of inferen ce, along its formal, social and cognitive dimensi ons. The overarching questions the conference them e will be concerned with are therefore the followi ng: How does the study of argumentation connect wi th the notion of inference and how, as a disciplin e, does it connect with the disciplines involved i n the study of the cognitive features of inference ?
\n\nTo fost er this discussion, the conference accordingly see ks to attract scholars in argumentation coming fro m a range of different traditions, including (but not limited to) philosophy, psychology, linguistic s, informal logic, speech communication, pragma-di alectics, epistemic approaches, rhetoric, dialecti cs, logic, and computational approaches.
In addition to welcoming submissions l inked to argumentation studies in general, each EC A edition has a special theme. While the 1st editi on of ECA was devoted to exploring the relationshi p between argumentation and the decisions that fol low from it, the 2017 Fribourg edition will focus on the cognitive processes involved in argumentati on, with a clear focus on what happens ‘upstream’ in the argumentative chain, both in production and reception. The 2nd edition of ECA will thus focus on inference as one of the key f eatures of the argumentative process. The abstract submission deadline is 1st of October 2016.
