SUMMARY:Workshop "Context in the explanation and e
valuation of human reasoning", Paris, France
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20170619
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20170623
LOCATION:Paris, France
DESCRIPTION:It is well known that human beings do
not always reason correctly. There are various kin
ds of fallacies and biases with which we meet in o
rdinary life, and reasoning problems to which most
people give wrong answers in experimental situati
ons. While context has by now been recognized as p
laying a fundamental role in the philosophy of lan
guage as well as in other philosophical fields, it
s role in the debate about human rationality has n
ot yet been explored systematically. The workshop
intends to examine what is the role of context in
various approaches to the explanation and the eval
uation of reasoning, but also, more generally and
ambitiously, whether and how the use of context in
the explanation and the evaluation of reasoning c
an be made more systematic and effective (even to
the aim of solving, or dissolving, the traditional
puzzles of the rationality debate). This worksho
p is part of the 10th International and Interdisci
plinary Conference on Modeling and Using Context (
Context-17). Workshop organizers: Marina Sbisà and
Paolo Labinaz (University of Trieste). We welcom
e presentation proposals from all relevant researc
h fields on the following topics (broadly understo
od): argumentation and context, context and fallac
ies, context and the norms of reasoning, rationali
ty and context, reasoning and cognitive developmen
t, reasoning and its evolutionary environment, rea
soning and pragmatics, and reasoning and relativis
 m. Submission due: December 31th, 2016.
