SUMMARY:Scientiae 2017: disciplines of knowing in
the early modern world, Padua, Italy
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20170419
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20170422
LOCATION:Padua, Italy
DESCRIPTION:The major premise of the Scientiae con
ference series is that knowledge in the early mode
rn world (roughly 1400-1800) was inherently interd
isciplinary, involving complex mixtures of theorie
s, practices and objects, which had yet to be sepa
rated into their modern 'scientific' configuration
 s. Although centred on attempts to understand and
control the natural world, Scientiae addresses nat
ural philosophy, natural history, and the scientia
e mixtae within a wide range of related fields, in
cluding but not restricted to Biblical exegesis, m
edicine, artisan practice and theory, logic, human
ism, alchemy, magic, witchcraft, demonology, divin
atory practices, astronomy, astrology, music, anti
quarianism, experimentation and commerce. This ye
ar attention is especially given to the history of
early modern knowledge and erudition, the history
of universities, particularly though not exclusiv
ely the history of the university of Padua, as wel
l as the history of the book and the history of po
litical thought. Our Keynote Speakers will be Paul
a Findlen (Stanford), Claire Preston (QM London),
and Antonio Clericuzio (Roma Tre).     Proposals a
re invited for the sixth annual Scientiae conferen
ce. Please email your 250-word abstract, together
with a one-page CV, before the abstract submission
deadline of 15 December 2016. We shall be notifyi
ng the selection outcome by 15 January.
