 -5-July-2017-Conference-on-Mereology-and-Identity-
 Pisa-Italy
DTSTAMP:20170410T140506
SUMMARY:Conference on Mereology and Identity, Pisa
 , Italy
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20170703
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20170705
LOCATION:Pisa, Italy
DESCRIPTION:The contemporary debate on mereology i
s largely hinged on the notion of identity. Indeed
, classical mereology dictates that complex entiti
es are identical if and only if they have the same
proper parts. On the other hand, many scholars wh
o doubt the adequacy of classical mereology point
to real or fictional cases in which different whol
es would have the same proper parts.  The upholder
s of Composition as Identity think that identity,
or a relation analogous to identity, also connects
a whole with its parts. By contrast, the opponent
s of Composition as Identity retort that compositi
on fails to respect some pivotal principles that h
olds for standard identity, such as the Indiscerni
blity of Identicals, coreferentiality  or transiti
vity. Finally, in the debate about Composition as
Identity, the so-called Sider-Yi Collapse seems to
show that some roles sometimes attributed to iden
tity are incompatible with the standard characteri
zation of plural identity. The conference will ho
st the main scholars involved in this debate, with
the purpose of encouraging innovative solutions t
o various open problems. The Scuola Normale Super
iore in Pisa (Italy) and the University of Padua (
Italy) have the pleasure to offer 6 bursaries (inc
luding a single room in Pisa, one social dinner an
d meals at the university restaurant for the durat
ion of the conference) to graduate students and po
stdoctoral researchers who are willing to be activ
ely involved in the conference. The selected parti
cipants ARE NOT expected to deliver a presentation
, but to attend the lectures of the invited speake
rs and raise objections and questions. Travel expe
 nses will not be reimbursed.
