We aim to investigate th e changing configuration of relations between pure and “applied” maths in different periods, with pa rticular attention to the “classical” era (17th an d 18th centuries) contrasted with the “modern” 19t h and early 20th centuries. The invited speakers are Helmut Pulte (Ruhr Universität Bochum-RUB), Iv ahn Smadja (Université de Paris Diderot – Paris 7 & Lab. Sphère) and Robert DiSalle (University of W estern Ontario). Contributed papers will be welco me on topics relevant to the workshop. In order to promote discussion and bring the workshop’s topic into sharper focus, we propose to consider, on th e ‘physical side,’ mainly the science of mechanics . Obviously the mathematical treatment of other br anches of physics is of enormous interest, but in this particular meeting we suggest to consider the m only insofar as they have affected the most prim ary aspects of the mathematisation of physics. Pro posals should be of a max. length of 500 words. X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:
