SUMMARY:1st International Workshop on Epistemology
  in Ontologies (EPINON 2017)
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20170921
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20170923
LOCATION:Bozen-Bolzano (Italy)
DESCRIPTION:Formal ontologies and knowledge repres
entation mainly focus on characterising how a give
n domain is structured, i.e., they identify a set
of concepts, entities, and relations together with
the constraints that hold for this domain. The st
ructure of the characterisation is usually intende
d to reflect the point of view of significant expe
rts or a realist view of how things about a partic
ular domain are. The aim of this workshop is to ex
plore an epistemological stance in formal ontology
and knowledge representation and focus on the ass
essment of the modelling provided by the ontology
designer. In particular, we are interested in fost
ering the discussion about two intertwined researc
h directions, the Epistemological Foundations of O
ntologies and the Ontologies of Epistemology. Thi
s workshop is part of The Joint Ontology Workshops
, Episode III, JOWO 2017. We aim to address to an
  interdisciplinary audience, by inviting scholars
in philosophy, computer science, logic, conceptual
  modelling, knowledge representation, and cognitiv
e science to contribute to the discussion on the E
pistemological Foundation of Ontologies and/or the
Ontological Foundation of Epistemology. We welcom
e two types of submissions: Research articles for
presenting original unpublished work, and Extended
abstracts for presenting brief descriptions of on
going research and projects, preliminary approache
s, or descriptions of related previously published
  research.
