SUMMARY:Mathematical & Metaphysical Explanation II
: Explanation, Grounding & Dependance, Pavia, Ita
 ly
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20171214
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20171216
LOCATION:Pavia, Italy
DESCRIPTION:The last decade has witnessed an incre
asing interest in two related notions, the notion
of metaphysical explanation, or grounding, and the
notion of mathematical  explanation. Grounding is
often described as a relation in which  explanans
and  explanandum are connected, not through some
sort of causal mechanism, but through  some consti
tutive form of determination. Mathematical explana
tions, on the other hand,  are seen as mathematica
l proofs that not only prove that something is tru
e, but also why  something is true. After a fir
st meeting aimed at taking a first step towards br
idging these two areas of investigation, the works
hop aims at further deepening our understanding of
  the connections between mathematical explanation,
  grounding, and metaphysical dependance, exploring
in particular the relationship between grounding
and recent views of mathematical explanation, the
role of metaphysical dependance in the debate on i
ndispensability argument, and the application of m
etaphysical and conceptual grounding to abstractio
n principles in the foundations of mathematics.
