SUMMARY:Ninth Workshop on the Philosophy of Inform
 ation: Information Visualisation, Brussels, Belgiu
 m
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20180626
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20180627
LOCATION:Brussels, Belgium
DESCRIPTION:The workshops in the Philosophy of Inf
ormation bring together various philosophical pers
pectives on the nature and dynamics of information
, and focus in particular on novel philosophical q
uestions that arise in the information society. Th
e central theme for the 9th workshop in the series
is information visualisation. Our aim is to focu
s on informational artefacts that encode or convey
information in order to try and explain why visua
lisations can play a certain epistemic role and wh
y certain visualisation are more effective than ot
hers. A special attention will be given to the stu
dy of how scientists rely on visualisations and ho
w visual artefacts are designed in the sciences. O
n this basis, we wish to explore convergences betw
een the philosophy of information and the philosop
hy of science as well as between the formal scienc
es (logic, computing) and the philosophy of inform
ation. We welcome contributions on the conference
topics, and encourage scholars of various discipl
inary backgrounds to explore the lines of inquiry
 we proposed.
