DESCRIPTION:The thesis investigates gender pattern
s in electrovocal music through a detailed study o
f several important compositions. It concludes tha
t this supposedly avantgardistic genre is surprisi
ngly in tune with conservative cliché's: most piec
es feature the performance of a wordless, emotiona
l, high-pitched soprano, whose voice is manipulate
d through the electronic equipment of an aloof mal
e composer. But exceptions do occur, especially wh
en the use of technology inspires a move away from
the traditional musical composition – for instanc
e by blurring the distinction between composer and
performer, and by abolishing the written score.
