Abstract:
\
n The history of AI has been a continuous swing o
f the pendulum between the extremes of logical rea
soning and statistical learning; or, as Judea Pear
l has it: between Greek philosophers and Babylonia
n curve fitters. In recent years, the pendulum has
swung strongly towards the statistical methods. W
e'll take a close look at the history of AI, and w
e'll identify the strong and weak points of both s
chools of thought. This will lead to a set of chal
lenges to be taken up by logicians if they are int
erested in contributing to one of the most excitin
g intellectual endeavours of our time.
The talk is the public part of the conference SYS MICS2019, an international scientific meeting in t he area of logic.
