DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The history of AI has been
a continuous swing of the pendulum between the ext
remes of logical reasoning and statistical learnin
g; or, as Judea Pearl has it: between Greek philos
ophers and Babylonian curve fitters. In recent yea
rs, the pendulum has swung strongly towards the st
atistical methods. We'll take a close look at the
history of AI, and we'll identify the strong and w
eak points of both schools of thought. This will l
ead to a set of challenges to be taken up by logic
ians if they are interested in contributing to one
of the most exciting intellectual endeavours of o
ur time. The talk is the public part of the confe
rence SYSMICS2019, an international scientific mee
ting in the area of logic.
