DESCRIPTION:There is a reason why we take some eve
ry-day ontological practices for granted. It is fo
r the same reason that people in Trafalgar Square
can‘t see England. ‘‘Pegasus flies’’, ‘‘Sherlock H
olmes is intelligent’’ and ‘‘Apollo is not a rock-
star”: all these things are conventionally accepte
 d. The question is: how can we make sense of them?
Or, to complicate the picture, consider ‘‘Ajax li
ked daises’’ or ‘‘Reptilians exist’’. This only ge
ts more puzzling; but why so? The existence of fi
ctional characters challenges our way of deciding
whether a sentence is true or not. Different philo
sophical stories seem to run into different formal
problems and vice versa. In short, during this ta
lk we will discuss stories about stories and try t
o make sense of our ontological practices. Join u
s for drinks and snacks afterwards!
