DESCRIPTION:The ILLC has a new lecture series, the
Meaning, Language and Cognition (MLC) seminar, pr
esenting research relevant to the Logic and Langua
ge group. The first speaker of the MLC seminar wil
l be Jos Tellings (Utrecht), discussing when 'if'
or 'when' are specifying modals. Abstract. In thi
s talk I analyze a construction in which specifica
tional 'namely' takes a modal expression as antece
dent, and an if- or when-clause as argument (examp
le: "Working as a filmmaker can be taxing, namely
if you're required to get sleek product shots"). S
uch cases do not satisfy previously claimed genera
lizations about the behavior of 'namely' in Anderb
 ois & Jacobson (2018) and Onea (2016). Moreover, t
hey show that modal expressions can raise an impli
cit question that gets answered by an if/when-clau
se. Not all types of modals allow this – I argue i
 t is restricted to Portner's (2009) category of "q
uantificational modals". This work gives insights
into the inquisitive character of modal operators:
following Portner's (2009) proposal for quantific
ational modals, we find a difference in inquisitiv
eness between quantifying over situations and quan
 tifying over worlds.
