SUMMARY:Workshop "Using Artificial Neural Networks
for Studying Human Language Learning and Processi
 ng"
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20240610
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20240612
LOCATION:ILLC, Amsterdam (the Netherlands)
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have
proven to be powerful learning devices for langua
ge-related tasks, as demonstrated by recent progre
ss in artificial intelligence driven by large, Tra
nsformer-based language models. But how can ANNs i
nform us about human language learning and process
ing? Our three-day workshop brings together resear
chers working on cognitively motivated and linguis
tic questions in studying the language processing
mechanisms and learning trajectories of ANNs. For
the first two days of the programme, we hope to s
timulate discussion on the workshop theme through
contributed presentations from our workshop partic
ipants and keynote speakers. The final day is focu
ssed on active interactions and collaboration betw
een participants, through small-scale tutorials an
d joint group work on a collaborative task.
