DESCRIPTION:This talk will provide a gentle introd
uction to the Shannon Capacity of graphs, a fundam
ental concept at the intersection of information t
heory and graph theory. The Shannon Capacity, intr
oduced by Claude Shannon in 1956, quantifies the m
aximum amount of information that can be transmitt
ed without error through a noisy communication cha
nnel, which is modeled as a graph. Despite decades
of mathematical research, including work by membe
rs of our department, many seemingly basic problem
s surrounding Shannon Capacity remain open. We wil
l survey some of these open questions.
