DESCRIPTION:I will survey a debate in the artifici
al intelligence (AI) research community on the ext
ent to which current AI systems can be said to "un
derstand" language and the physical and social sit
uations language encodes. I will describe argument
s that have been made for and against such underst
anding, hypothesize about what humanlike understan
ding entails, and discuss what methods can be used
to fairly evaluate understanding and intelligence
  in AI systems.
