DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the PhD defense of Valent
in D. Richard, we would like to gather colleagues
working on related topics. With this workshop, we
aim to gain a broader picture of how a sentence co
ntributes to a discourse. The meaning of a sentenc
e cannot be derived on its own. Together, sentence
s form larger discourse units, structuring the inf
ormation flow. Questions are a fundamental part of
human dialogues. Moreover, many illocutionary act
s also rely on implicit questions, the so-called Q
uestions under Discussion (QuD). Therefore, unders
tanding how questions help construct a conversatio
n is essential. This workshop welcomes talks on n
ovel or promising proposals regarding information
structure, inference generation, and the modeling
of natural language meaning. The boundary between
semantics and pragmatics remains a hotly debated t
opic. When designing a natural language model, wha
t building blocks and principles should we use to
 explain context-dependent phenomena, especially ba
ckground inferences? We hope that this gathering c
an yield interesting insights into questions and t
 he discourse.
