SUMMARY:Graduate Philosophy Conference on Normativ
ity, Universiteitsbibliotheek, Singel 425, 1012 WP
  Amsterdam.

DESCRIPTION:It has been strongly argued that human
rationality, language, and meaning are intrinsica
lly normative, and that as such they cannot be des
cribed in purely naturalistic terms. But how are w
e conceive of normativity? Taking this question as
our starting point, we are interested in bringing
together young researchers who are working toward
s a model that helps explain the nature of norms u
nderlying human cognition and (linguistic) behavio
ur. We are happy to announce that the conference
's two confirmed keynote speakers are: - James O'
Shea (University College Dublin) - Allan Gibbard
(University of Michigan) We invite papers on a b
road range on topics relating to this theme. Contr
ibutions may concern - but need not be limited to
 - the following questions: - What is normativity
and what are its sources? - How do norms differ
from causes? - How relevant is normativity in acc
ounting for meaning in natural language? - What i
s the nature of norms in human reasoning and decis
ion-making and how do they bind us? - How do soci
al practices and individual factors determine or c
onstrain norms underlying human reasoning? - What
is the normative force of conventions in communic
ation? For further information, you can visit t
 he conference website at: https://www.illc.uva.nl/
normativity/ or contact: normativity at science.uv
