SUMMARY:ESSLLI-2011 Workshop "Logical Constants",
 Ljubljana, Slovenia
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20110808
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20110812
LOCATION:Ljubljana, Slovenia
DESCRIPTION:All logical systems make a distinction
between logical and non-logical symbols, and the
meaning of the former needs to be specified in det
ail and in effect defines the logic in question. T
his distinction is usually stipulated (though it c
an be argued that natural languages make a similar
distinction), but the issue of the grounds for it
 , i.e. of what characterizes a logical constant, i
s a central question in logic, cutting across the
huge variety of logical systems existing today. Th
is question has been tackled from various sides, r
anging from historical investigation to formal cri
teria spelled out within different logical framewo
rks. The main aim of this ESSLLI-2001 workshop is
to gain a better understanding of the problem by b
ringing together complementary approaches coming f
rom various fields, namely logic, philosophy of lo
gic and mathematics, linguistics and the history o
f logic. For more information, see http://lumiere
 .ens.fr/~dbonnay/files/conference/logicalconstants
.htm. Deadline for submission: Feb 15 2011. Notif
ication to authors: March 15 2011. Submissions sho
uld consist of anonymous abstracts of no more than
  3 pages, single-spaced, 12pt, including title and
references (preferred formats for submission are
pdf and Word). Abstracts should be sent electronic
 ally to: logicalconstants2011 at gmail.com
