DESCRIPTION:Abstract: The Second Lecture applies
the historical approach I have been developing to
issues of interest within contemporary philosophy
involving naturalism, mathematics, and the place o
 f normativity in a scientific world-view. I do thi
s by briefly sketching a new look at the history o
f philosophical rationalism and its involvement wi
th mathematical science from Plato, through the sc
ientific revolution of the seventeenth century (Ga
lileo, Descartes, Newton, Leibniz), to Kant. And I
aim thereby to indicate how we might fruitfully g
o on from this rationalist tradition today. For m
ore information, contact Y.T.M.Verbeek at uva.nl.
