DESCRIPTION:American philosopher Daniel Dennett (C
enter for Cognitive Studies at Tufts University) h
as addressed two of the major cultural questions o
f our time, questions that have defined our self-i
mage: Where do we come from and What is consciousn
ess? He has shown that through the power of thinki
ng combined with sheer hard work one can add new i
nsights to the fields of study that these question
s traditionally have belonged to, in this case evo
lutionary biology, neurobiology and psychology. De
nnett addresses philosophical questions with tools
derived from the Life Sciences. The new insights
that he has developed are challenging and consider
ed groundbreaking among the experts. However, they
are also highly accessible to a wider academic re
adership. This symposium offers a select group of
PhD students an opportunity to enter into discuss
ion with Daniel Dennett on a range of philosophica
l topics. The idea is that questions to Dennett sh
ould be inspired by on-going PhD work of the stude
nts. Deadline for applications: Tuesday 1 May 2012
