But what does it mea n: cryptography? How can you encrypt your data, an d how safe is it? What is the status of quantum cr yptography? And how safe is digital data for intel ligence agencies and privacy? This summer Edward Snowden, a computer security specialist at the U.S . National Security Agency, blew the whistle on th e practices of that service. Together with the Bri tish GCHQ they eavesdrop on much of the Internet t raffic, including encrypted communications. They d o this by forcing major Internet to transfer data, but also to crack the encryption or even weaken i t beforehand. Thus cryptography - essential for sa fe Internet - becomes less reliable: for e-mail, b ut also for banking. Wednesday 16 October, the Bè taBreak will be in the central hall of the Faculty of Science building at the Science Park, and we w ill discuss these subjects with the following gues ts: Jeremy Butcher of the Crypto unit at IT securi ty company Fox-IT, which in the Netherlands plays a key role in the investigation of and protection against IT security incidents.Rop Gonggrijp, edito r-in-chief of the hacker magazine Hack-Tic, founde r of XS4ALL, creator of the Cryptophone and captai n of 'Wij vertrouwen stemcomputers niet' ('we do n ot trust voting computers').Christian Schaffner, a ssistant professor at the Institute for Logic, Lan guage and Computation (ILLC), and researcher in th e field of quantum cryptography.
