DESCRIPTION:In this (tutorial) talk we present som
 e of the usual (very) large cardinals, which are t
 hose described by the existence of elementary embe
 ddings between transitive class models of ZFC set
 theory. We look at some standard results and techn
 iques in the context of such elementary embeddings
 . Subsequently, we introduce the hierarchies of C^
 (n)-cardinals, which were defined and studied by B
 agaria, giving an overview of their properties and
  connections with the usual large cardinal hierarc
 hy. Finally, we mention some recent applications o
 f C^(n)-cardinals outside of set theory. (The talk
  is meant to be accessible to master level student
 s.) For abstracts and more information, see http:
 //www.staff.science.uu.nl/~ooste110/seminar.html o
 r contact Benno van den Berg (bennovdberg at gmail
 .com).
