DESCRIPTION:Discourse anaphora are important devic
es for achieving cohesion in natural language text
 s. It is, therefore, important that natural langua
ge generation systems are able to correctly use th
e anaphoric devices provided by natural languages
in order generate fluent and natural sounding text
 s. Research in natural language generation has c
oncentrated on one specific class of anaphoric exp
ressions, namely, definite noun phrases referring
to a previously mentioned entity. Anaphora that es
tablish a link to an expression which is not co-re
ferent with the anaphoric expression and non-nomin
al anaphora have not been treated, so far. In my
talk, I will present the standard approaches to t
he generation of co-referential noun phrases and w
ill then show how to extend them to other kinds of
anaphoric expressions. In particular, I will disc
uss the generation of bridging descriptions (as in
  1) and of additive particles (as in 2). (1) Ant
onia walked towards the house. Suddenly, THE DOOR
opened. (2) Antonia likes cake. She ALSO likes ic
e cream. For more information, please contact m
