DESCRIPTION:'Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
', a recent movie, presents a romantic and futuris
tic neuroscience approach to deleting autobiograph
ical memories. Although the idea of inducing amnes
ia may be intriguing it seems to be mere speculati
on in the light of the state of the art in neurosc
ience. In this lecture I will review the role of a
 utobiographical memories in emotional experience;
how do these memories contribute to what is experi
enced? After that I will discuss an approach to th
e modulation of emotional memories, which may even
tually result in the modulation of emotional exper
ience. I propose that retrieval of past emotional
experiences needs hippocampal and amygdaloid trans
mission as long as this retrieval generates emotio
nal responses. Memories that generate emotions are
'hot', in contrast to cold memories that are not
accompanied by arousing emotional reactions. I hyp
othesize that these hot memories are better consol
idated than cold memories. Modulation of emotional
memories occurs through the action of stress horm
ones, which may influence encoding, consolidation
as well as retrieval. Let's see where we are at th
is point in time. For more information see the C
 SCA website at http://www.csca.uva.nl/.
