DESCRIPTION:This talk is devoted to a problem pose
d by iterative expressions, common in colloquial s
peech, of the sort in 'I'm very very tired.' In a
nutshell, the problem is that expressions of this
sort mean very similarly in all languages (typical
ly emphasis, but also a few, arguably related, not
ions involving extension of some characteristic sp
ace); as cognitive grammarians have pointed out, t
his is an a priori puzzle for any theory that assu
mes the essential arbitrariness of the syntax/sema
ntics interface. My solution to this puzzle implie
s treating the relevant expressions in Markovian f
ashion. For more information, see http://www.hum
