DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Some philosophers have arg
ued that using ‘I’ is the source of illusions, for
instance the illusion that I am the author of my
actions and thoughts rather than thoughts and acti
ons happening to me, or in me. Lichtenberg maintai
ned that “we should say ‘it thinks’ or ‘there is t
hinking going on’ rather than ‘I think’.” In the s
ame vein, Nietzsche urged that “a thought comes wh
en it wills, not when I will.” And nevertheless, u
sing ‘I’ seems to be an indispensible tool for eac
h individual person to refer to herself. What do o
ur uses of ‘I’ reveal about our relations to ourse
lves, to others, and to the world?
