SUMMARY:Colloquium Muziekwetenschap, prof. dr Marc
  Leman (Universiteit Gent)
ATTENDEE;ROLE=Speaker:prof. dr Marc Leman (Univers

LOCATION:Universiteitstheater, zaal 301
DESCRIPTION:This talk is about the first chapter o
f a book which the author is currently finishing.
The chapter introduces the problem of music signif
ication and aims at analyzing the main themes of a
new theory of music mediation. First, he introduc
es the distinction between direct involvement with
music and description of this involvement. In bot
h cases, it seems that subjective engagement with
music is important. In a second section, the quest
ion is asked to what extent a subjectivist approac
h can contribute to a theory of music mediation. T
he position of subjectivism, however, is difficult
to maintain because of its weak philosophical fou
ndations in skepticism. Therefore, an alternative
account, based on human action, is proposed. Final
ly, this alternative is considered in view of thre
e foundations, namely linguistic descriptions, cor
poreal descriptions and the call for technology-me
diated access to music. Marc Leman is hoogleraa
r aan de afdeling Musicologie van de Vakgroep Kuns
t-, Muziek-, en Theaterwetenschappen van de Univer
siteit Gent (UGent). Hij is vakgroepvoorzitter en
directeur van het onderzoeksinstituut IPEM. Hij he
