DESCRIPTION:Congratulations! Together with our cat
s and cattle, we, humans, have accumulated a stagg
ering portion of the planet's walking biomass — an
unlikely fea(s)t for top predators like ourselves
. But is biomass what makes humans special? How ab
out logic? Language? (Computation?) Some would say
that all of these are ‘mere’ products of somethin
g more fundamental: our species’ remarkable capaci
ty for cumulative culture. The idea that cultural
processes indeed hold answers to deep questions a
bout language has fascinated a group of researcher
s for decades. This talk is a brief excursion into
their field: the cultural evolution of language.
We will follow the route of ‘iterated learning’, w
hich tries to understand how cultural transmission
can shape languages. On the way, we visit an unli
kely assortment of topics: from zebra finch song c
 ultures, emerging compositionality and integer-rat
io rhythms to baby names, Bayesian learners and ev
en genetic drift. Snacks and drinks will be provi
ded in the common room after the talk!
