DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Philosophers often distingu
ish between causal responsibility and moral respon
sibility, taking the latter to be an important mar
k of our distinctive humanity. But focusing exclus
ively on the attitudes and judgments we form towar
d people on the basis of their moral characters an
d behavior leads us to overly narrow conceptions b
oth of responsibility and of humanity. As a correc
tive, this lecture considers the attitudes and jud
gments we make of artists on the basis of their ar
twork. By attending to the way in which artists ma
y be aesthetically responsible for their creations
, we can develop a richer understanding of respons
ibility and a more comprehensive idea of humanity.
