DESCRIPTION:On November 15, 2010, Leo Esakia died
rather unexpectedly in Tbilisi at the age of 76 ye
ars. He was one of the important logicians, mainly
working in algebraic logic. His name will live on
in his Esakia spaces, ordered topological spaces
that play a fundamental role in the theory of Heyt
ing Algebras by the Esakia duality between the cat
egories of these spaces and algebras, and in many
other theorems and concepts. By his knowledge,
energy and enthousiasm he was a source of inspirat
ion to a large number of students, among which Gur
am and Nick Bezhanishvili, and David Gabelaia. Thr
ough these students he had important connections w
ith the ILLC, and he himself was always involved i
n the organization of the 2-yearly Tbilisi Symposi
a in which the ILLC joins the Georgian logicians a
nd linguists. [The last of these Symposia, in 2009
, was dedicated to his 75th and Dick de Jongh's 70
th birthday.] Leo Esakia was continuously working
with his students on new problems, he gave a long
lecture to them only last week.
