SUMMARY:PhD position Linguistics/Philosophy (Groni
 ngen)
DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20160920
DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20160920
LOCATION:Groningen
DESCRIPTION:We offer a fully funded PhD position i
n the NWO-funded project "The Language of Fiction
and Imagination" led by Dr. Emar Maier (Groningen)
. The aim of this project is to develop a formally
explicit account of the interpretation of fiction
as "imagination updates", exploiting existing fra
meworks in semantics (e.g. Discourse Representatio
n Theory, Mental Spaces), and philosophy (e.g. Men
tal Files, pretense theories of fiction). The posi
tion advertised is for a subproject centered on th
e linguistic questions raised by the project: How
does a reader even know that a given text is ficti
on? Are there linguistic clues an author can leave
to mark a text is to be interpreted as an imagina
tion update? The goal is to give a formal semantic
analysis of putatie fiction markers (e.g. free in
direct discourse), building on the semantic machin
ery developed in the other subprojects, and engagi
ng with existing work in both formal/cognitive lin
guistics and literary studies/narratology. You ma
y apply for this position until Tuesday 20 Septemb
er (23:59 local Dutch time) by means of the applic
ation form at the RuG vacancies website. The pre
ferred starting date is 1 January 2017, or earlier
. You may apply for this position until Tuesday 20
