Speaker: Yurii Khomskii (Hamburg)
Title: The Logic of Infinity
Date: Thursday 13 April 2017
Time: 18:00-19:00
Location: AUC Common Room, Science Park 113, Amsterdam

Abstract: From ancient times, philosophers have struggled to make sense of the concept of "infinity". Famous paradoxes, such as Zeno's paradox, Galileo's paradox and Hilbert's hotel, have been considered by philosophers in order to underline the counterintuitive nature of infinity. In this lecture, we shall look at some of these paradoxes from a modern mathematical perspective, with a particular emphasis on the role that predicate logic plays in the formalisation of infinite principles.
