The Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) has a temporary vacancy for a Lecturer / Researcher position at the Faculty of Science. The position combines a 50% research task in one of the research areas of the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation, with a 50% teaching task concerning courses in logic at the Amsterdam University College.

The ILLC is a research institute at the University of Amsterdam in which researchers from the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities collaborate. Its central research area is the study of fundamental principles of encoding, transmission and comprehension of information. Research at the ILLC is interdisciplinary and aims at bringing together insights from various disciplines concerned with information and information processing, such as logic, mathematics, computer science, philosophy, linguistics, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and musicology.

The Amsterdam University College is a full-time selective three-years honours programme in liberal arts and sciences at bachelor level. The AUC was established in 2009 as an excellence initiative jointly undertaken by the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and VU University Amsterdam (VU). AUC has an international and intercultural focus with English as the language of teaching and learning. It distinguishes itself in the Netherlands and from most liberal arts colleges internationally by a strong focus on the sciences. The curriculum offers ample opportunities for students to focus on science and science-related majors and the development of strong analytical and quantitative skills is integral to the learning experience of all students.

Job description

The teaching task will be focused on the mandatory first-year course Logic, Information Flow and Argumentation in the Academic Core of the AUC curriculum. The course provides an introduction to basic concepts and tools of logic and argumentation that lie at the heart of rigorous scientific reasoning and practice. Characteristic of the course is its interdisciplinary character and its emphasis on applications of logic in various areas, such as computation, linguistics, philosophy, communication and cognitive science. The successful candidate will be expected to take care, on an annual basis, of five of the parallel groups of this course.

The research component of the job is not restricted to a specific area of the ILLC, with the proviso that the position is at the Faculty of Science. The successful candidate is expected to be able to conduct research independently. S/he will be required to draw up a research plan for a three-year project to be carried out and completed during the temporary appointment.

Tasks

  • Contribute to the teaching of the Logic, Information Flow and Argumentation course at Amsterdam University College (and/or related courses);
  • conduct independent research in one of ILLC~s research groups and areas, resulting in contributions to leading international publications;
  • (co-)supervise student projects.

Requirements

  • Relevant PhD degree;
  • excellent teaching skills and experience in teaching logic at university level, with demonstrable didactic abilities and/or training, as evidenced in student evaluations (if available);
  • the ability and willingness to coach students intensively and to be part of a multi-disciplinary and international team;
  • excellent research skills and experience, evidenced by publications in renowned international journals or conference proceedings;
  • team spirit, a strong affinity with ILLC's multi-disciplinary environment and with the teaching philosophy of the AUC which requires a clear affinity with an interdisciplinary approach to education and an affinity with liberal arts and sciences.
