Location: Bushuis/Oost-Indisch Huis

Deadline: Monday 18 December 2023

What do we mean by 'responsibility' in the digital age? How do disciplines differ in their understanding of responsibility? Where do they meet?

We are excited to invite you to our second edition of the Responsible Digital Transformations Keywords Project, with focus on 'responsibility'. Marjolein Lanzing, Jelle Zuidema and Somendra Narayan will share their views on responsibility with us, and we invite you to join a lively interdisciplinary discussion.

The RDT keywords project is inspired by Raymond Williams's original work on keywords to understand how we talk about society and culture, as well as more recent attempts to repeat this in specific sub-domains such as the AI-Now Lexicon. Following these examples, we propose a distinct effort to collaborate across faculties on relevant keywords, such as 'data', 'algorithm', 'platform', 'AI', 'culture', 'public values', 'data ethics', as inquiries of interdisciplinary language and complex issues.

We invite three scholars from different academic disciplines to share their understanding of the keyword and we encourage an UvA-wide audience to join the conversation.

Speakers:
Marjolein Lanzing is Assistant Professor Philosophy of Technology at the University of Amsterdam at the Faculty of Humanities.
Jelle Zuidema is Associate Professor in Natural Language Processing, Explainable AI and Cognitive Modelling at the Faculty of Science.
Somendra Narayan is Assistant Professor of Strategy and Innovation at the Faculty of Economics and Business.
