PhD student grant in argumentation and rhetoric, Warsaw (Poland)

The Laboratory of The New Ethos is looking for a PhD student in the project '[AMoRe] An Argumentative Model of Rephrase: Pragmatic and Rhetorical Approach' co-funded by the Polish National Science Center (NCN; Grant Agreement No. 2020/39/I/HS1/02861) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). AMoRe will run for 48 months and will be led by a Swiss-Polish team: The New Ethos lab at the Warsaw University of Technology in Poland (Marcin Koszowy and Katarzyna Budzynska), University of Fribourg in Switzerland (Steve Oswald and Pascal Gygax), and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan in Poland (Barbara Konat). The project will involve collaboration with the AMoRe International Advisory Board of researchers: Isabela Fairclough (UK), Jean Goodwin (US), Benno Stein (DE), and Christopher Tindale (CA).

The goal of AMoRe is to elaborate an argumentative model of rephrase, a discursive phenomenon in which the speaker presents a contribution as compatible with an original statement, while altering its wording and meaning for rhetorical gain by increasing the emotional load of the message, clarifying or summarising the content of the message, or establishing their own ethos along the dimensions of expertise or eloquence, for instance. To that end, we will capture illocutionary intentions of rephrasing in argumentation and their persuasive effects on the audience.

The New Ethos lab is looking for a candidate who has excellent analytical skills (such as an experience in discourse and argument analysis) along with the understanding of the basics of relevant disciplines (such as argumentation theory, rhetoric, pragmatics, and philosophy of language with a special focus on speech act theory) and is interested in studying natural communication.

The PhD project is supervised by Marcin Koszowy at the Warsaw University of Technology which is ranked number one among all technical universities in Poland. The university is located in the lively and modern center of Warsaw.

The PhD stipend is PLN 5,000 per month without tax (approx. EUR 1,090). The employment will start on *1st January 2022* (or sometime later, if necessary) and will last for 48 months.
