PhD student position in Argumentation for XAI, Warsaw (Poland)

Deadline: Friday 1 October 2021

The Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) is looking for a PhD student in the EU funded project "Interactive Natural Language Technology for Explainable Artificial Intelligence" (NL4XAI). The goal of NL4XAI is to develop innovative technologies which involve NLP and XAI. The PhD at WUT is dedicated to "Customized interactive argumentation schemes for XAI" (ESR8), and is supervised by Katarzyna Budzynska (WUT) and co-supervised by Jose M. Alonso (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain).

While the project as a whole focusses on the computational aspects of AI and NLP, ESR8 aims at the theoretical foundations for implementations of XAI. We are looking for a candidate who has excellent analytical skills (such as an experience in analytic philosophy, logic, programming) and is interested in natural communication. The student will join the Laboratory of The New Ethos which combines argumentation theory and argument technology with studies on strategies of appealing to speakers' character, i.e. ethos, in natural communication. The project budgets for PhD students to participate in several training workshops organised by the NL4XAI partners, and in secondments at partner institutions: the WUT student will spend two three-month visits in Santiago de Compostela, and one three-month visit in Barcelona's area with the industry partner Accenture Technology.
