8 Open Positions in Philosophy at Utrecht University, UItrecht (the Netherlands)

The department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Utrecht University has 8 open permanent positions in philosophy. The application deadline for all positions is February 26.

1. Associate Professor of Ethics or Political Philosophy of Technology (1.0 FTE)

We are looking for a new senior colleague specializing in political philosophy and/or ethics, with particular focus on the issues raised by emerging technologies and their implications for society, human well-being, and the planet. As a successful candidate, your research aims to develop the philosophical concepts and normative theories that can help guide appropriate responses to the broad range of transformations associated with AI, digital, and data-driven technologies (including health technologies and robotics). We invite applications from philosophers who address socio-political phenomena (e.g., mass surveillance, political polarization, working conditions, platform economies) as well as those focused on ethical concerns (e.g., algorithmic bias, moral status of AI, automated decision-making, care robots). In addition to an established track record in teaching and publication, successful candidates will have a demonstrable capacity and affinity for leadership.

2. Assistant Professor of Ethics or Political Philosophy of Technology (1.0 FTE)

3. Assistant Professor of Moral, Political, or Social Philosophy (1.0 FTE)

We are looking for a new colleague in moral, political, or social philosophy. The successful candidate's research specialization and teaching competence is in at least one of the following areas:

theories of normative justification (in metaethics, ethical theory, political philosophy, or philosophy of human rights);ethics and/or political philosophy of environmental issues or sustainability;social philosophy (including critical social theory, feminism, critical race theory).

We are especially interested in philosophers from diverse perspectives, whose work is informed by sustained engagement with global philosophical traditions, theoretical perspectives, and/or lived experiences that tend to be marginalized or underrepresented within philosophy departments in The Netherlands.

4. Assistant Professor of Philosophy of AI (1.0 FTE)

We are looking for a new colleague who specializes in philosophical issues of AI at the intersection of theoretical philosophy (e.g. epistemology, philosophy of science, philosophy of language, metaphysics, etc.) and practical philosophy (ethics, political philosophy, moral psychology, etc.). We invite applications from philosophers with an interdisciplinary orientation to collaborating with computer scientists, linguists, legal theorists, psychologists, data scientists, etc. on various aspects of AI (e.g. AI safety and alignment, explainable and responsible AI, and the socially disruptive effects of AI technologies). You will conduct research and teach courses in practical and theoretical philosophy at all levels in our philosophy programs, and to contribute to our interdisciplinary degree programs in artificial intelligence.

5. Assistant Professor of Philosophy of Science (1.0 FTE)

We are looking for a new colleague who specializes in Philosophy of Science with a focus on the philosophy of AI (e.g., epistemology of machine learning, explainable AI, hybrid AI, symbolic vs. sub-symbolic). You will be part of a group of theoretical philosophers with broad interests in logic, philosophy of logic, philosophy of AI, epistemology, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind and action, and metaphysics. You’re enthusiastic about working in interdisciplinary teams working on different aspects of AI. Your background in analytic philosophy allows you to teach courses in theoretical philosophy at all levels in our philosophy programs, and to contribute to our interdisciplinary study programs in Artificial Intelligence and Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE).

6. Assistant Professor of Theories of Practical Reasoning (1.0 FTE)

We are looking for a new colleague who specializes in theories of practical reasoning (e.g., rational and social choice theory, game theory, psychology of practical reasoning, theories of inference). You will be part of a group of theoretical philosophers with broad interests in logic, philosophy of logic, philosophy of AI, epistemology, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind and action, and metaphysics. 7. Assistant Professor of History of Islamic and European Philosophy (1.0 FTE)

We are looking for a colleague with a research expertise that resonates with the research profiles of our groups. We expect the new colleague to develop a research line that brings together topics in the history of European philosophy (where we are particularly interested in strengthening our expertise in medieval and/or Renaissance philosophy) and in Islamic philosophy (here, we are open as to the specific area of expertise). The specific research focus can be negotiated according to the new colleague’s expertise.

Within teaching, the new colleague is expected to contribute to introductory courses in both the Islamic and Arabic studies and the philosophy programmes (examples: “Introduction to Islam”; “Qur’an and Hadith”, “History of philosophy: Medieval and early modern philosophy”; “The place of humans in the natural order”; “History of metaphysics”), and to MA-courses.

8. Assistant Professor of Modern European Philosophy (1.0 FTE)

We are looking for a colleague with a research expertise that resonates with one (or more) of the central research themes within our group. We expect a research focus upon one of the classical movements in modern philosophy that contribute to what is called ‘continental philosophy’, such as phenomenology or critical theory, and a clear awareness of methodological issues in historical research. We also expect the candidate to take part in interdisciplinary research activities. With respect to teaching, the candidate is expected to teach in the programs in philosophy and in interdisciplinary programs such as the HPS-master. In particular, we are looking for a colleague who can strengthen our teaching profile in the fields related to ‘continental philosophy’.
